
The terrific cast includes tenor Roberto Alagna in the title role, soprano Marina Poplavskaya as Elisabeth, bass Ferruccio Furlanetto as King Philip II, baritone Simon Keenlyside as Rodrigo, mezzo-soprano Anna Smirnova as Eboli, and bass Eric Halfvarson as the Grand Inquisitor. (The company has been showing encores of its Live in HD series during the current pandemic crisis.)

With director Nicolas Hytner, conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and a starry array of singers, the Metropolitan Opera crafted a world-class production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlo. (RDA) Marina Poplavskaya (Elisabeth) & Roberto Alagna (Don Carlo) (c) Ken Howard PBS is set to present a number of other works from the Met Opera stage including “Turandot,” “Lucia di Lammermoor,” and “Hamlet.United States Verdi, Don Carlo (archived Live in HD encore): Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera / Yannick Nézet-Séguin (conductor). This opening duet established a relationship that became the center of the opera and which one felt most aligned with.” Dupuis gave Polenzani’s Carlos valor as he was forced to accept the loss of Elisabeth. During the duet ‘Le voilà! C’est l’Infant!,’ the two sang with ringing voices and strength.

The review noted that Dupuis was the standout and “the baritone established his kinship with Matthew Polenzani’s Don Carlos with tenderness and a loving embrace.

Of the production, OperaWire’s Francisco Salazar noted that while the production did not really present the “original” French version of the opera, it yielded solid performances from its leads. The Verdi opera stars Sonya Yoncheva, Jamie Barton, Matthew Polenzani, Eric Owens, John Relyea, and Étienne Dupuis. PBS has announced that it will start broadcasting the Metropolitan Opera’s performance of “Don Carlos” on Sunday, August 7, 2022.
